Monday Links: Greeking, Linking, Fishing, Social, Mobile & Engagement

1. Geeking with Jonathan, no wait, “Greek-ing with Jonathan Mendez with the speaker, the listener and the argument in “Lessons in Ad Persuasion from Aristotle“.
2. Proactive Profile Linking. Social profiles and profiles of any kind can provide benefits as part of a Search Engine Reputation Management effort since they can rank well on brand and company names. Profiles can also provide a source of crawlable links. It may serve a company well to secure the profile names before the competition does. Two tools that will quickly check user names at multiple sites include: usernamecheck.com and the social media keyword check tool from Solo SEO.
3. Opportunistic traffic fishing. It’s common knowledge that advertising, editorial/media and even trending topics on the social web drive search traffic. However, SEO efforts with content and links take time to see results. Or do they?  Combine keyword based social media monitoring (blogs, forums, MSM, Twitter, video, […]

My Five Months With Google Chrome

Om Malik wrote an interesting post about Google Chrome one month after the public launch. While I was reading Om’s post, I realized that I wrote a post for the Google Chrome release that I never published. I’ll include it here, and then let’s meet at the bottom and compare notes.

Like many Google engineers, I’ve been running Google Chrome for several months. When I sat down with a blank piece of paper to write down why you should try Google Chrome, I ended up with several reasons, including speed, security, stability, and openness. I’ll run through them for you.
Speed. Google Chrome is wicked fast, especially if you use AJAX/JavaScript-heavy web applications such as Gmail. And it’s not just “benchmark fast,” it’s end-to-end fast. Google Chrome puts special emphasis on never making the user wait. Opening a tab is essentially instantaneous, and all the little pauses that would normally […]

Google Book Search Affects ECommerce, Is Your Vertical Next

Last night I was looking up some books that were recommended to me, and saw my first Google Book Search in the # 1 SERP [Travel Wise: How to Be Safe, Savvy and Secure Abroad] (screen shot below).

So the question you need to be thinking about is how much is a radical change like this affecting booksellers like Amazon. Then the thing that should scare the living daylights out of you is what happens when Google decides to move into market?
While Google acolytes will be along shortly proselytizing that this is “good for the user”, excuse me if I doubt Google’s altruistic sincerity in the matter. As Google moves more and more into content stewardship with projects like this and Google Knols, IMHO they are waist deep in the sea called conflict on interest.
Again IMHO Google’s arrogance lets them travel down the river of denial guilt free blissfully deluding themselves […]

Breast Cancer, Social Media, and Picnik.com

Earlier this week Barbara Boser of 3 Dog Media made a post asking people to turn their avatars pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
So in an effort to help a good cause I tried to play along, however trying to turn my avatar a shade of pink wasn’t as easy as I thought, I ended up being several shades of purple. So I twittered hoping somebody with an “in” would get in touch with the folks at Picnik.com about adding a pink filter.

Turns out the Picnik folks have a twitter account and are monitoring for vanity searches and responded to my tweet …

Then Friday afternoon they announced a special pink filter

You can get the full story on the Picnik blog.
Moral of the story social media can be a powerful tool, if you are willing to learn how to use it.
If you are looking to go pink or looking for a […]

Quick comment for pixelrn

I tried to leave a comment on pixelrn.com but the problem with talking about hacked sites is that you often end up using language that gets flagged as spammy. Here’s what I tried to say but the WordPress installation over on pixelrn wouldn’t let me:

Hi Beth, I checked and it doesn’t look like you have any spam-related penalties or anything like that. For a long time, something seemed wonky on your WordPress where http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:c_RD9jcaIRUJ:www.pixelrn.com/2007/08/10/us-nursing-schools-getting-you-down/+site:pixelrn.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=175&gl=us if you view the site showed “<title>Nurse + Blog = PixelRN</title>” as the title instead of the name of the post. In fact, a search like http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1C1GGLD_en&q=site:pixelrn.com&start=170&sa=N shows some really weird title and snippet behavior.
Ah, this appears to be a problem too. Check out view-source on http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:c_RD9jcaIRUJ:www.pixelrn.com/2007/08/10/us-nursing-schools-getting-you-down/+site:pixelrn.com&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=175&gl=us and you can see that your site was hacked. View the source and see stuff like <a href=”http://oregonstate .edu/~silvat/wordpress/index.php?list=524″ title=”Byetta - Exenatide Injection”>Byetta - Exenatide Injection</a> at the […]

Wrap Up of MIMA Summit 2008

The dust has settled, mountains of email have been sorted through and most of this year’s attendees of MIMA’s Summit, branded “FEED” are back into the swing of things.
As you can tell from the photo above, it was a sold out event and a very big venue. Both keynotes were informative and entertaining. Rebecca Lieb’s presentation was covered by TopRank’s Jolina Pettice and while we didn’t post on Ze Frank’s amazingly entertaining presentation, you can pretty much get a feel for it from his presentations at SXSW last year and from what he’s presented at the TED conference.
Those whose interactive marketing interests extend to the boob and penis humor category were likely satisfied by both keynotes as they touched on everything from jiggly French Maid “how to” videos to crowdsourcing creative phallic drawings.
Despite the sophmoric humor, key messages were clear:

advertising is evolving as content
publishers are competing with advertisers
humanizing brands vs […]

New meme: Tag five friends to register to vote

Okay, I’ll help on this. A Google blog post and the corresponding video ask people to register to vote (find out how at http://maps.google.com/vote ) and/or send this video to five of their friends. I’m game for that, mainly because Jonah Hill is the funniest man in the world and he says to do it. If Jonah ever starts lifecasting, that would end my productivity for life.
So here’s the video:

And I’m registered to vote, so I’m tagging five people to spread the video:
1. Gabe Rivera, of Techmeme fame.
2. Danny Sullivan, of Search Engine Land fame, because he just came back to the United States.
3. Lisa Barone, of Lisa Barone fame. She just moved across the country and might need to register.
4. Shoemoney, because he knows how to get a good ruckus going online.
5. Robert Scoble, because he might be even more virally contagious than Shoemoney.
Vote however you want. But please […]

Newsletters and Community Building

Having been involved in internet marketing for more than a few years, it’s interesting to see ideas fall out of favor only to come back in fashion, specifically email newsletters and true community building.
I’ll admit that I’m a big fan of RSS as it allows me to consume larger amounts of information as I scan thru headlines on my feed reader. However if you are looking to have a deeper level of interaction with your audience, going to a newsletter is the way to go. For those of you who think I’m drinking the kool-aid, I’ll point you to a post from Seth Godin … in the middle, Starting. To explain it simply if you are reading my newsletter chances are you know who I am and know some of my stories and conventions, and there’s no need for me to go back and explain things to you, as […]
