We Don’t Need Less Robert Scoble We Just a More Filtered and Relevant One

Vanessa recently spoke about Twitter By Phone, Now With Default Scoble, and I agree with her it’s a problem, however what we really need to do is deal with the cause of the problem not the symptom.
The problem is the age old one facing bloggers, excessive cat blogging or in this case cat twittering. People really need to go back and get a grip on the 80/20 rule of focus originally published by Nick Wilson on Performancing. While you should go read it for those of you who are lazy, basically it says you need to keep at least 80% of your posts on topic and no more than 20% of your posts should be off topic. Not to pick on Scoble as my buddy Jason Calacanis is the same way. I may want to know what they feel about Techmeme (scoble on techmeme and calacanis on techmeme) but I […]

Tips on your Google Reader subscriber numbers

On Friday, Google Operating System noticed that Google Reader will tell you Google Reader subscriber numbers for a blog when you search to add a new feed. It didn’t take long for different folks to start collecting subscriber numbers for different blogs. I haven’t asked the Reader team about this, but it looks like this is just the counts for Google Reader subscribers. Before charging off to compute a bunch of stats, you should know a few things:
1. A blog can have multiple feeds, and you may want to add up the subscribers for the most important feeds.
For example, here are subscriber numbers for my blog:

I got that data by going to Google Reader, clicking on “Add subscription” and then searching for the string “mattcutts”. If you have a unique string in your domain name, that’s a good way to see the top feeds for your site.

Top SEO Blogs on Google Reader

There appears to be some discrepancy between Google Reader subscribers reported by Google Reader and those numbers reported by Feedburner.
We’ve previously published a list of search marketing blogs by Feedburner RSS subscribers, so for fun I thought we’d post that same list of SEO blogs by Google Reader subscribers:

John Battelle’s Search Blog - 35,976
Search Engine Watch - 5,862
SEOmoz - 4,589
Search Engine Land - 3,910
Search Engine Roundtable - 2,843

Search Engine Journal - 2,181
Online Marketing Blog - 1,952
Matt Cutts - 1,754
Graywolf’s SEO Blog - 1,344
Search Engine Guide - 896
SEO Pedia - 552
Small Business SEM - 411
SEO Scoop - 405

One thing is for sure, there are several […]

Minnesota Search Marketing Association

Online Marketing Blog is fortunate to have readers all over the U.S. and world wide, but this post is geared towards search marketers here in Minnesota and the upper Midwest. Although, it would be great to hear opinions from others that have been in a similar situation as what’s described here.
There’s been a bit of buzz over the past year, very slight at first, and recently it’s been picking up around the idea that the midwest or Minnesota at least, needs a dedicated search marketing association. I know there are many, many super talented, experienced SEOs as well as paid search pros that have either kept their networking and collaboration to very small, tight circles or rely on national events and the connections that technology has brought through IM, social network sites and the ever unproductive microblogging formats like Twitter, to stay connected, collaborate, network and share.
At the same time, […]
