“Managing PPC for Multiple Clients” had for me the pleasure of being a “slow-burn” of a session at SES Chicago.
For those unfamiliar with a term I may or may not have created, it means that it did not leave an immediately strong impression on me, until I later was fortunate enough to review the notes I had taken.
The session, moderated by the always exceptional Kevin Ryan featured a panel of:
Joe Rosza, President of SEO Columbus
Matt Naeger, VP & General Counsel for Impaqt
Christopher Upkes, Director of Agency Business Development for Adapt Technologies
Craig Macdonald, VP of Marketing for Alliances & Product Management
So what was is it that resonated with me most about this session upon further reflection?
Even more so than the notion of managing PPC accounts, it was the notion of “managing”.
We […]

What’s great about working in a new and constantly changing industry, that still manages to adhere to several of the rules of the past, is that you can take an old adage and play around with it and try to coin it to fit our new world.
For example, “An image is worth a thousand words,” could turn into:
“An image is worth a thousand links”
“An image search results is worth a thousand text search results”
“A properly branded image is worth a thousand non-branded images’
And so on…
So were the themes of the hyper-paced “Images & Search Engines” today at SES Chicago.
Moderated by Anne Kennedy, the panel featured:
Shari Thurow, Founder & SEO Director at Omni Marketing
Chris “Silver” Smith, Lead Search Strategist at Netconcepts
Amanda […]

While walking the WebmasterWorld Pubcon exhibit hall floor I ran into Brett Crosby from Google. We talked about some of the new enhancements that have been added to Google Analytics. The addition of site search tracking in Google Analytics was of particular interest to me and I thought I would share here.

Oftentimes, the birth of one technology, while dubbed a death-knell or replacement for an existing technology, instead simply means an evolution.
Television, for example, was not a death-knell for film nor for radio. In fact, film & radio have evolved to not only exist in their original environments, but spill over into the newest technical mediums.
The web is perhaps the strongest example of this, as film, television, and even radio have migrated over to this medium.
So was the starting point for my first session at SES Chicago – Day 3 titled “Podcast & Audio Search.”
The session, moderated by Danny Sullivan featured on its panel:
Amanda Watlington, Owner of Searching For Profit
Daron Rabin, From WebMaster Radio
When attempting to be found or brand yourself using audio content, would you believe the actual physical recording is actually the easy part?
In fact, this process can be outsourced to the experts, namely, the […]

Whether you’re part of the search industry or just affected by it, you’ve probably not only grown used to change but are excited by it.
Attending a session this morning about personalized and universal search, we had a panel full of excited folks and audience members all bursting at the seams to discuss what these two types of search bring.
Panelists included:
Moderator:
Greg Jarboe, President and Co-Founder, SEO-PR
Speakers:
Dave Davies, CEO, Beanstalk
Jonathan Mendez, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, OTTO Digital
Richard Zwicky, Founder and CEO, Enquisite
Aaron D’Souza, Software Engineer, Google
Bill Barnes, Co-Founder & Executive Vice President, Enquiro Search Solutions Inc.
James Colborn, Director, US Trade Marketing, Microsoft Corporation
The start of it all is Google making its personalized search much more the default for many users, shaping search results based on a number of criteria. As well, its roll out of universal search.
Aaron D’Souza, from Google, made sure the audience understood the differences between the two for […]

It seems nearly every conference will have an overarching theme to it. (Rather, it seems the sessions I choose to attend at any given conference will have an overarching theme to them).
The final session I attended during Day 2 of SES Chicago, “SEO & Development: Get It Together” spoke further on what I had been seeing throughout the day, and served as a nice bookend to my first conference session, “Usability & SEO”.
The conference, moderated by Chris Boggs, included on its panel:
Geoff Karcher, President/Owner of The Karcher Group
Sage Lewis, President of SageRock.com
Colton Perry, SVP of Technology at NetPlus Marketing
The session continued on the overall theme of SEO & design working together from the conception of a website and through each of its days to ensure a powerful blend of creative and SEO best […]

The “In House SEO” panel included Jessica Bowman formerly with Business.com but now with Yahoo, Bill Macaitis from Fox Interactive Media and Aaron Shear who was from Shopping.com but is now a consultant. Moderator duties were handled by Todd Friesen.
More companies are bringing search marketing in house either because they want to save money, they want to have more control or they want search to be more closely integrated with other business marketing and processes. Moving search in house is a significant undertaking and this session was focused on shedding light on some of the organizational challenges/opportunities to be considered.
When I finally made it to the session, I had missed Jessica’s presentation and Bill Macaitis was just starting.

“Of all our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.” Walt Disney
Jennifer Laycock Editor-in-Chief of Search Engine Guide helped the audience understand the value of images and 3 benefits to submitting photos to image sharing sites, like Flickr.
She made an excellent point by demonstrating what impacts people the most:
Copy OR Images
Let’s try it. What impacts you more, the description of how I dressed my dog up for Halloween OR the picture of it?
Description: For Halloween, I dressed my pup up as an angel.
Image:
Without the image - or having to include a lot more copy - questions are left unanswered. In this example, questions that are answered through the image, but not the copy include:
-what Wrigley looks like
-what color(s) he is
-what kind of dog
I agree with Jennifer, people are drawn to images. Not only are images entertaining, but they immediately tell us a story.
So, […]

Mixing up a combination of video interviews, session coverage and images is just how we do it here at TopRank. The following is a roundup of my favorite photos from Pubcon on day one. Unfortunately, I forgot the memory chip for my camera while at the Yahoo party at Parasol Down in the Wynn, but I suspect Tamar or Rebecca may have taken a few pics.
