Danny Sullivan had a big day today. He announced that he’s moving back to California from England this year, and he bought a Mac yesterday. I’m not sure which surprises me more, but it’s probably the Mac thing. I really thought Danny would be the last search/SEO person converted from a PC to a Mac. That also reminded me about a 2008 prediction I made.
I should explain that I love prediction posts. Back at the end of 2007 I wrote a few predictions, and somehow never got around to posting them. Better late than never, although if I waited a few more months I could just recycle them as 2009 predictions. Some of these predictions are more far-fetched and aspirational (as in, “I really wish someone would do this”), but I’ll still throw them out here.
One tricky bit is that I didn’t make any big predictions about Google below […]

Hey Google Maps and Google Calendar can I get a “send to Google Calendar” option … puhlease …
Of course I’m totally going to ask for a “merge with event” function next. You know it’s not like I was near Mountain View last week or anything and could have made some suggestions when I was there … not at all slightly disgruntled or annoyed about that … because despite the fact that I am royal PIA I am also power user of almost all the Google tools and it’s not like I can actually make suggestions that would be helpful … really … what … I’m totally laying the groundwork for next time …

As a growing mid-sized online marketing agency, TopRank has had opportunities to interview well over a 100 people for various search engine optimization and internet marketing positions. We’ve been fortunate to hire and develop an amazing team of professionals. We’ve also experienced the flip side.
There are increasing numbers of resources from which to attract or find candidates whether it’s traditional online job boards like Monster.com, SEO job listings at SEMPO or sites dedicated to SEO recruiting. Making sure actual SEO skills and experience are in alignment with company/client needs is as important as setting accurate expectations for job responsibilities and work environment.
Hiring more experienced internet marketers in the hopes of bringing a knowledgeable outside perspective to a constantly evolving set of processes can seem promising. However, finding experienced SEO professionals who are willing to work for an agency can be challenging. This is especially true if working remotely […]

Been cleaning up my email tonight and I noticed an influx of comments. One that particularly got my attention was Matan Media’s comment in response to my pose regarding web hosting. Needless to say (though I’ll say it anyway), as the title of this post suggests, it got me to thinking about the similarities of SEO and marriage (or at least mine ^_^). Here’s what I came up with…
They both take a lot of work.
Every little thing counts.
Overlooking the foundation/basics will result in critical errors in the future.
Very dynamic. Just when you think you’ve got it something comes up to complicate things. You need to continuously watch the trend and tweak and adjust.
Learning about it can both be frustrating and funny. In retrospect the things that seemed mind-boggling and utterly frustrating now seems trivial and even funny once you understand a certain problem.
It may be hard work but once you […]

So you’ve seen the Aizatto’s Related Posts plugin that I use here and other people use as well. Which got me thinking we need one for affiliate offers too. In addition to scanning the text it would be great if it could look at tags and categories. So let’s say you run a fashion blog and you’re blogging about a pair of peep toe Mary janes you came across.
How cool would it be if at the end of the post a plugin read your tag and threw in links to several different affiliate program links based on the tags, category, and content. Imagine you are writing a post about traveling to Chicago and at the end of the post it drops in affiliate links to Expedia, Travelocity for Chicago.
Yes my conversion minded friends will tell me you should be doing this now directly in the post, and I agree for […]

Last week I was at the SMX West Search Marketing Conference, and I thought I’d share a few thoughts about the conference.
Rule #1 always choose the closer airport. I’m a spoiled baby, and when I fly for more than 3 hours I need to be entertained, the only way I can guarantee that is on JetBlue. However the flights to SJC were more expensive and at worse times than the flights to SFC. While I saved a little money going to SFC, in the end the difference was not worth it, lesson learned. If you follow me on twitter you shared the experience/frustration. However I did get to have lunch with Greg, Barbara, and Caesar.
My favorite sessions were the keynote by Danny Sullivan (coverage on Bruce Clay, and SER) and the Day 2 Keynote by Louis Monier (coverage via Bruce Clay and SEL). Danny nailed it, really out of the […]
