TopRank Online Marketing is pleased to announce a parternship with The Direct Marketing Association to develop and present a series of 2 day workshops on social media marketing for direct marketers.
On December 4th in New York the new course entitled: “Social Media Smarts: An Introduction to the Social Web, Tools and Strategies” will introduce participants to the marketing and communications channel opportunities of social media through practical demonstration of social media tools, case studies and exercises. The first 3 workshops will be held in New York, Chicago and then again in New York.
Decreasing marketing budgets and increased consumer skepticism towards traditional advertising is driving many companies to new ways of attracting and engaging customers. At the same time, new communication channels such as social media represent the most significant change in marketer/advertiser communications with customers in the history of marketing.
To help educate in-house and agency side direct marketers on how to […]

As I try and dig my way through my overflowing post conference inbox, and mostly overdue Remember the Milk to do list I thought I’d take a few minutes and share my thoughts on Pubcon 2008.
As someone whose been to more than few conferences, the obvious question is, is there still value in going to a conference, and for me the answer is absolutely yes. Shawn Rorick the Director of Search Marketing for Cirque du Soleil, gave the opening keynote and spoke about the convergance of new media and old media, and how a website is part of an overall marketing strategy. It’s a concept he called Halo Media
taking a holistic marketing approach is something I’ve been trying to teach my clients, but halo media does a better job of simplifying the concept in a name. You can see all of Shawn’s presentation here
Something that was hard to miss at […]

Please welcome guest blogger Jessica Rosenberg, a freelance writer and active social media user who blogs daily at It’s my life… and does product reviews at The Lemonade Stand. Jessica attended BlogWell: “How Big Companies Use Social Media” event this week in San Jose.
As sponsors of BlogWell, TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog also did a pre-event group interview with social media gurus from Wells Fargo, Home Depot, UPS & Graco who presented at the event.
Eight major companies gathered in San Jose, CA this week to demonstrate how they are using social media the “right” way.
The goal of the BlogWell conference, organized by GasPedal, specialist of word of mouth marketing, was to show corporations interested in entering this new and nontraditional field how to navigate the scary waters of social media marketing.
As Ken Kaplan from Intel put it “seeing Social Media as a new way of communication makes sense. It’s […]

The dust has settled, mountains of email have been sorted through and most of this year’s attendees of MIMA’s Summit, branded “FEED” are back into the swing of things.
As you can tell from the photo above, it was a sold out event and a very big venue. Both keynotes were informative and entertaining. Rebecca Lieb’s presentation was covered by TopRank’s Jolina Pettice and while we didn’t post on Ze Frank’s amazingly entertaining presentation, you can pretty much get a feel for it from his presentations at SXSW last year and from what he’s presented at the TED conference.
Those whose interactive marketing interests extend to the boob and penis humor category were likely satisfied by both keynotes as they touched on everything from jiggly French Maid “how to” videos to crowdsourcing creative phallic drawings.
Despite the sophmoric humor, key messages were clear:
advertising is evolving as content
publishers are competing with advertisers
humanizing brands vs […]

I must say, of all breakout sessions at the MIMA event today, “The Changing Face of Email” session was the one I was most excited to attend as it ties into what I love to do – email marketing. Thankfully I didn’t have to wait long to dive right in as it was part of the Summit Kick-Off Breakout session: Deep Dive Discussion Series.
Jamie Schissler, Strategy Director at Avenue A – Razorfish, the presenter for “The Changing Face of Email” session shared with the MIMA audience that as the role of email evolves, so too will its impact.
So why will the email marketing strategies of yesterday not work for email marketing success today?
A few key answers and issues that were stressed in the session that and I would like to focus on in order to answer this question were:
Deliverability
Test & Measure
There are far more distractions as well as competition than […]

I wonder how many people reading this blog right now work for a company that:
1) Doesn’t have a blog
2) Has a blog but it’s on life support
3) Is considering blogging but not sure where to start
4) Has been blogging for a while, but wants to make it to the next level
Well, I’ve got some really good news. On the heels of the OMMA New York conference Sept 18-19 comes Blog World Expo in Las Vegas Sept 20-21. What better place to have the world’s largest conference dedicated to blogging than the city that never sleeps because most of the active bloggers I know don’t sleep either.
TopRank has been tasked to source speakers and moderate a panel at Blog World Expo on “Search Engine Optimization and New Media”. We have an impressive panel with Michael Gray aka graywolf, Brian Clark of Copyblogger.com and Stephen Spencer of Netconcepts. An impressive lineup on […]

I added Joost’s upcoming plugin that uses the upcoming system to let everybody know where I’m going to be. If you attend or speak at a decent amount of conferences, shows or events, IMHO it’s a pretty neat tool.

The following is a Guest Post from brandy Eddings.
Last school year while at recess my daughter approached a group of boys playing kickball. She asked if she could join, the boy holding the ball told her “only boys can play”. My daughter’s response was “then why are they letting you play” she grabbed the ball and ran onto the field and no one else opposed her joining and the game went on. Her teacher told me that now all the games at recess are now co-ed and they have never had that happen in the years she has taught at that school. Without realizing it she used determination and humor to change the culture of the school.
I get that Blogher is about supporting female bloggers but creating a double standard of not even allowing male speakers at their conferences goes a little too far. Now I’m not against women supporting […]
