New Website ViralConversations.com

So if you’ve been wondering where I’ve been the past week, I’ve been putting the finishing touches on a new website ViralConversations.com. The idea behind Viral Conversations is putting business owners who have a product or service, in touch with bloggers who are interested in reviewing it. The difference between this website and other website review services is Viral Conversations only deals with real world tangible products.
Hopefully most of the questions you have will be answered in the FAQ, but I’ll answer a few here as well:

This is not a paid linking service, bloggers who write reviews are NOT required to link to merchant websites.
Agencies can use the service for their clients.
You don’t have to be the sole manufacturer of a product

We’ve tried to answer almost everything in the FAQ, but we’ll add to it as needed.
Ideally we like to see this service used for a wide variety of […]

Google PRoblems

Seen changes, whether good or bad, in your Google page rank lately? You shouldn’t be surprised since Google since according to Matt Cutts there was a PR update that took place end of last month. If your site was adversely affected by the PR update my advise is to NOT sweat it because page rank alone does not determine how well you do in Google’s SERPs.
Take Phoenixrealm, we do not have a really great PR right now (were down to just 3) but if searching for us in Google using the very competitive term SEO BLOG I’m very happy to see that we still have the number 5 spot. So you see page rank is not everything.
There are those who will find a lowered page rank a real problem though but only because:
A) their clients (or they themselves) still subscribe to the myth that page rank is everything, or
B)  they […]

Digg’s Most Valuable Asset is User Data … Who Else But Google Needs That

As much as I loathe rehashing news stories I’ll throw my hat into the failed Google buying Digg story.
IMHO Digg’s most valuable asset is it’s user data. It’s not a viable advertising platform, I’d wager 75% of the people who come to the site are using adblock or some other ad-negating software or plugin. I constantly see advertising for products like Horoscopes or Astrology which is completely mistargetting the Digg audience. While Digg has expanded the categories to target more mainstream users, the lack of moderation has lead to a hostile Lord of the Flies environment, where the average person is downright terrified to participate.
The only thing that Digg has that’s of any real value is the user data. The only person who has any real need for that is Google. Yahoo or Microsoft far too distracted. In fact watching the Yahoo - Microsoft possible buyout/merger is like watching […]

Google-Yahoo Deal News Links

The internet is abuzz with the Yahoo-Google deal. With all the news you can read instead of writing up a long post about it I will just provide links to some really good articles that pretty much sums up the different views regarding the deal. Before I do that though let me just point out some of the developments in Yahoo leading up to the Yahoo-Google deal.

Microsoft offers Yahoo $35 per share.
Yahoo declines.
An ultimatum is given by Miscrosoft.
Yahoo’s revenue increases by 9% giving Yahoo the ability to rebuff Microsoft even more.
Things get quiet for a little bit.
Yahoo announced that Microsoft was no longer interested in buying Yahoo.
Yahoo announced a non-exclusive partnership with Google. The deal will make Google an ad (search ads of course) supplier for Yahoo. Google can cancel the deal if it doesn’t reach the revenue target of about $83million.
The deal instantly gets attention and is being scrutinised […]

Double take With DoubleClick SEM

If you are one of those who got excited about Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick Performics because you want to take advantage of the search marketing services then you know by now that your hopes are dashed. Google has made it very clear that they do not want their objectivity both in search and in advertising to be clouded due to the special interests of their Performics clients. Because of this they have announced earlier this month that they were selling the Search Marketing component of Performics and just integrate the affiliate marketing component of Performics with existing solutions offered by Google. I’ve been waiting for news on the Performics sale but two weeks later there hasn’t been any word. Anyone hear anything about this?

Hostile Takeover Here We Go

The Microhoo possibility is still very possible after all despite Yahoo’s continuous refusal to Microsoft’s unsolicited bids. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer sent a new letter to Yahoo’s board of directors dated April 5 this time giving an three weeks for Yahoo to accept their proposal. In the letter an ultimatum was given stating that they are prepared to initiate a hostile takeover in case Yahoo stil doesn’t give a (we can assume positive) response by the time the deadline arrives. Here’s a snippet of the interesting letter.
Dear Members of the Board:
It has now been more than two months since we made our proposal to acquire Yahoo! at a 62% premium to its closing price on January 31, 2008, the day prior to our announcement. Our goal in making such a generous offer was to create the basis for a speedy and ultimately friendly transaction. Despite this, the pace of the […]

Wordpress 2.5 Ready for Beta Testing

For those who do not take the time to even glance at the Wordpress Development blog snippets on their Wordpress dashboard I suggest you do take sometime to read their latest post on the upcoming Wordpress 2.5. I wouldn’t be going on any details since you can read everything on the sneak peek. So far though I can say that it seems to be looking good. I look forward to the customisable dashboard and the supposedly more intuitive navigation they promise. I’m holding off from giving a formal review though until I have actually tried it out, which I have no plans of doing until it is officially released (set to happen really soon).
If you want to be among the first to test it out though you can download the Wordpress 2.5 test version and join the Wordpress testers mailing list to help them smooth out the kinks.

Ask Going on a Different Track

Last week saw the search industry lose one of its big (though not that big) players - Ask.com. It has been more than a week since rumours regarding the end of their use of Teoma came out but according to as Teoma was still going to be their core search engine technology. By last week though it was clear that Ask will no longer be the same again. It has given up on its efforts to overcome the almighty Google and instead now plans on focusing on a smaller and more specific market - married women. While there is nothing wrong with focusing on a niche market it is a sad day indeed for Ask enthusiasts and those that saw the great potential of this once innovative search company.
I guess this means one less search engine to worry about.

Yahoo! Open Search Implications

Yahoo announced their open approach to search last February with much enthusiasm. The new open search platform will “all Web site owners — big or small — an opportunity to present more useful information on the Yahoo! Search page…[by] providing all types of additional information about their site directly to Yahoo! Search”. The new platform also allows users to have control over their search experience by allowing them to choose whether they want to see the additional information provided by the websites or not.
The new open search platform sure sounds exciting but like most things that sound new there are pros and cons that have to be considered.
Pros:

Customisable search results will allow site owners to give additional information that they deem important. Very exciting for search marketers.
Useful apps are sure to arise due to the open platform.
Customisable SERPs flavour allows user to determine whether they want to simply see default […]
