Philip Rosedale From Second Life on Information Retrieval

The following is a video from Philip Rosedale of Second Life speaking at TED. From a search engine and information retrieval perspective the video get interesting at about minute 9:00 . He poses the thought that things are going to change that the text web will eventually be replaced by imagery and symbology in virtual worlds. Also interesting is his example of how the web is devoid of social interaction in shopping and e-commerce environments.

So Where Have I Been and What Have I Been Up To

Blogging’s been a little lighter than usual the past few weeks as I was getting caught up, but now that my heads back above water, the regular blogging should kick back in.
Also by special arrangement I’ll be blogging weekly-ish over on DIR Journals you can check out my first post Tips for Optimizing for Universal Search: Video. Also you can read Using Social Media as a Sales Channel by Shana Albert, and SEM for Mom and Pop: Turning Big Challenges into Golden Opportunities by Melanie Nathan. Barry Welford is also on board none of hos posts have published yet though, but stay tuned they are coming I promise.
Also I’ll be starting a monthly column on Search Engine Land, although my boss already yelled at me cause I got the date for my first deadline wrong, but I’m on it now I promise.
I’ve also got a guest post in the works […]

Why Font Selection and Usability Matter on Your Product

So last night I was chatting with Rae about Partnering for Profits program on Copyblogger. I paid signed up and downloaded my PDF copy. I sent myself a copy of the PDF by email so I could read it on my iPhone. When I did I encountered a problem I see with a lot of other products so I thought I’d share.
The PDF is printed in a serif font (fonts with little thingys hanging off them) at the end. This is a carryover from print days when newspapers like the New York Times or Wall Street Journal used them. However they are really bad for usability/readability on the web. For web based material you are much better off using a clean sans-serif font like Arial or Verdana. Think I’m being a baby take a look at the screen shots below and tell me which you find more readable.

#1) serif font […]

Apology to Guy Kawasaki

Earlier this week I made a post about Guy Kawasaki, and in retrospect it wasn’t the best course to take, and I’d like to apologize. My intent wasn’t to damage his reputation, because he is an author and speaker I like and respect. My intent for the post was to put Google on the spot for their paid link policy and bring the issue in front of a wider audience.
To be clear the decision to change the title of the post and re-order the content with Guys explanation first was my own. No one threatened me, no one had their lawyers send nastygrams to me, no black helicopters or any of that.
People make mistakes, sometimes really bone-headed stupid ones, in incredibly public places. It’s not the first one I’ve made and I doubt it will be the last, but hopefully I realize when I do make one and try to […]

FlyClear Discount Code

If you’re here looking for the Flyclear discount code it’s below just copy and paste it into your application and you’ll get an extra month for free. If you want to learn more about the FlyClear program, keep reading below …
DSCAM12013314

Since I travel to about 8-10 SEO shows a year now, and have handful of on site client meetings, I’m actually spending more and more time in the air and in airports. FlyClear is program that allows you to register your biometric information (fingerprints and retina scans) and have a background check done on yourself to prove to the airlines that you aren’t a security risk. Once you are approved you get to go on a special line, which almost always has no wait, and bypass the sometimes lengthy standard security line (just like a disney fastpass but at the airport). When you get to the flyclear security station you […]

IMNY Party Dani’s Strike Zone

Earlier this week we had our IMNY monthly meet-up and our member Dani Horowitz was nice enough to host the event at her bowling alley Dani’s Strike Zone in Elmont NY. I have to say for bowling alley the place was pretty cool. Nice and clean, good food, and a huge party room. So big thanks to Dani for hosting a great night. How Seth Godin Keeps Pissing me the F*%$ OFF

Dear Seth Godin,
I read your blog and I buy your books I like your stuff so much I gave them as Christmas presents to my clients, but when you write this kind of stuff it pisses me off
A quick glimpse at just about any profession shows you that the vast majority of people who succeed professionally also went to college

Really please stop it now, there are very few professions that require a college level education. Doctors, lawyers, accountants and so yep I’m with you, but for everybody else drive, and desire are much more important … really

Untapped Niches and the Mile High Club

On my flight to the SMX Search Marketing Conference the stewardess made this announcement over the PA system …

“Do we have any newlyweds, married couples or lovers on board … (some passengers raise hands) I’d like to remind you that the bathrooms are single occupancy rooms, so please wait till you land and get a hotel room, thanks …”

Maybe a tad unprofessional, but considering I don’t remember seeing any children on board, it was all in good fun.
However tonight I came across a story about a mile high tower being built somewhere and it triggered a thought. Why doesn’t someone run a private jet service that caters exclusively to people who want that James Bond Mile High Club experience. How hard would it be to convert a small plane to have an isolated bedroom chamber?
There would be almost no startup advertising costs, really after a few well placed press releases […]
