The first post-lunch session of day 3 of Pucon brought together a great mix of SEO experts including: Todd Malicoat, Rand Fishkin and last minute fill-in for Jessie Stricchiola, Andy Beal. Moderator duties were handled by Joe Laratro.
First up is Todd who covered 30 different tools which are too many to mention here but included tools for: browsers, domain server, keywords, competitive research, ranking checkers, backlink checking, on page optimization, spidering, productivity and tools for fixing duplicate content. but the most interesting included:
User agent switcher allows you to surf the web as if you were a bot from an engine so you can see sites the way search engine spiders see them.

Been trying out Aaron Wall’s new Firefox extension, Rank Checker, and it works really well. If you want to have no problems making it work though let me remind you of the difference between a URL and a domain.
We all know that the URL of a website is its HTTP address. For us that would be http://www.phoenixrealm.com/. We also know that the domain is also used to locate the the address of a website. However, they are different in that the domain of a website is just a subset of the site’s URL. So for this site the domain would be phoenixrealm.com.
So why did I give that short review on the difference between URLs and domains? Because I have to admit that I use the two terms very loosely and often interchange in my mind. In my defence this is because it usually doesn’t matter if you type in the […]

We already know that ALT tags should be used for relevant images (I say relevant because you can skip putting ALT tags for images placed in your page for purely aesthetic and/or organisational purposes such as borders). However, what many neglect to do is to take advantage of Google’s enhanced image search. The enhanced image search is actually very useful for helping the images in your pages rank better in Google images SERPs. Enhanced image search actually helps you rank better through the selection of labels that are more relevant to the images in your site. According to Google they are able to associate the image sin your site with relevant labels through the use of Google Image Labeler.
To opt-in to Google’s enhanced image search simply login to Google Webmaster Tools, choose the URL of the site you wish to have the enhanced image search enables, click Tools, and then […]

I haven’t really had time to go over my mail these days and my inbox has A LOT of unread mail (not to mention the unread categorised mail that goes directly under their labels). As you know I subscribed to Joost’s WP and SEO mailing list and reading all the backlog at once is actually pretty nice. My favourite topics/tips so far are the ones below. I wouldn’t go into any details because you can subscribe to the mailing list if you want to get the plug-ins yourself. ^_^ However, I will explain just a bit why I loved these three topics.
Changing Post Slugs Without Risks (Redirection plug-in by John Godley) : The post slugs plug-ins would be very very very useful to me because I have a bad habit of clicking on the publish button BEFORE I edit posts (I know I shouldn’t do that but and I am […]

For those who haven’t noticed or did notice but didn’t use the new features that came out last December here’s a quick overview on the Content Analysis feature. As the name suggests the new feature is very useful at analysing the content of your website. So what exactly does it analyse? The content analysis feature gives a report on metadata issues that could affect Google’s crawling and indexing your web pages as well as your website’s usability. Some of the specific metadata issues looked into by the content analysis feature include:
1. Title tag issues

duplicate title tags
long title tags
short title tags
non-informative title tags
2. Meta description issues

images
other non-indexable content

[Note from Lee: We tend to get a bit heavy on the industry observations and strategy, so a nice tactics/tools post is in order. ]
There are many different tools out there for SEO’s to use on a website. Each one has different features and benefits depending on how you use them. That’s why TopRank provides SEO Tool Reviews from time to time. We showcase different tools that you may or may not know about. Some free, some paid, all good.
The basis of this SEO tool review is Firefox. “Firefox a SEO tool”, you say? Alone, Firefox is not an SEO tool, but there are many extensions and toolbars that can be added to Firefox to extend it’s possibilities past basic web browsing.
What makes Firefox so great?
It’s free.
It’s secure. If a security issue comes up, the Firefox team plugs it in just a few […]

I don’t know how I missed Matt Cutts’ video on Webmaster Central Blog on removing your content from Google. Anyway it’s not too late to give a summary of the talk especially since it is very useful.
There are several options for removing your content from Google although not all options are very good. Dan, at Doublespark-SEO blog, recently discussed two options, robots.txt file and the nofollow attribute. To learn more about both options please read the posts there. The great thing about Matt Cutts’ talk is that I preferred the robots.txt method before, but now after listening to the talk, it simply makes sense to use the two methods he favored.
Best Options:
.htaccess - Use this to password protect a directory. This method is really good for preventing a page/directory from being indexed since Google bot won’t even attempt to guess the password and so won’t even be able to […]

The Internet Marketing Ninjas instructional program including videos and tools conceived by Jim Boykin of We Build Pages, has officially launched. I think a lot of people in the search marketing industry will be wowed by the sheer volume of quality information that’s available. Currently there are a series of 12 videos from the likes of Aaron Wall, Shoemoney, Neil Patel and Jim himself. Plus, most of the famous We Build Pages SEO and link building tools have been taken offline and included in the program along with many of the private WBP tools.
I was fortunate to be included in the program and Jim was good enough to take some time and answer a few questions about Internet Marketing Ninjas during the launch to cover how/why it was started, how he was able to get some of the smartest search marketers to give up their secrets and what future enhancements […]

Raise conversions by 55% you say? That’s what Marketing Sherpa says in the promo copy for their new Landing Page Handbook. One of the most popular posts we’ve ever had on Online Marketing Blog was the 10 Landing Page Tips by Jon Miller of Marketo. That’s why I think this new report from Marketing Sherpa may be of interest.
You can spend a lot of time testing and fine tuning landing pages on your own from scratch, but in many cases, it makes a lot of sense to get a bit of a head start. This guide is about both the art and science of landing page creation and optimization.
The nuts and bolts of the Landing Page Handbook includes advice on page design, copy writing, tip on getting conversions via search, email, B-to-B, ecommerce and blogs plus over 100 landing page examples. There’s also research data from the Sherpa “Marketers […]
